As an installer, you save time by getting the drain right from the start — simple, accessible, and sized for the real flow rate, slope and frost risk. A few clear choices, and your commissioning visits go by without a callback.

Why a condensing boiler produces so much condensate

A condensing boiler recovers the "hidden" heat contained in the water vapour of the flue gases. When those gases are cooled below their dew point, the vapour turns into water. As a result, the lower your installation's return temperature runs, the more condensate you have to manage.

Condensate flow rate: what makes it vary (output, efficiency, outdoor temperature)

The flow rate first follows the output actually used: the more gas the boiler burns, the more water it creates. It also rises when efficiency in condensing mode is good, which usually means cold returns. In winter, demand goes up. But if the return temperature climbs, condensation drops. For sizing purposes, plan for continuous flow and a trap sized for peak loads.

To know when it's necessary in a renovation, keep in mind the available head and the inability to guarantee a continuous gravity slope.

Confirm the flow direction all the way to the wastewater network or the neutraliser. With a lift pump, test it with clean water.

Sewer or flue-gas odours often come from an empty or leaking trap. Gurgling signals an air intake or insufficient slope. Overflows, white marks and corrosion around the boiler point instead to a clog, a freeze, or a saturated neutraliser.
