On site, damaged insulation quickly turns into an unhappy client and costly rework. By identifying entry points from the initial visit and choosing the right materials and protections, you secure performance over time, without loading up the quote. The result is a cleaner renovation, and insulation that actually holds up.

Understanding why rodents attack your insulation

In attics or behind a wall lining, rodents dig tunnels, compress the insulation and build nests in it. The result is that air circulates where it shouldn't. You lose comfort, and thermal resistance drops. Fibrous materials are often the most affected, because they're easy to work through.

Rodents take advantage of small defects that fly under the radar. A displaced tile, a damaged roofing membrane, a poorly sealed hatch. Lower down, the crawl space and utility runs are classic access points. A duct, a penetration, a gap under a technical door, and the visit begins.

Before blowing in or removing insulation, spot the clues. Fresh droppings (small and black), scratching noises at night, a persistent smell of urine, or insulation shredded into a "nest" are classic signs of rodents. Also watch for grease marks along runways, gnawed packaging, and chewed cables.

Checking the at-risk areas: edges, under the roof, wall bases, hatches and boxes

Focus the inspection on entry points. Roof edges and the underside of the roof, gable junctions, wall bases and cracks, attic hatches, duct runs, and roller shutter boxes. During the job, do another round after removal, that's often where tunnels and nests appear.

At sensitive points, add a mechanical barrier. Fine stainless steel mesh, perforated sheet metal, flashing, closed casing, sealed boxes, and rigid finishes (plasterboard, OSB, hard render) make access more difficult. Focus especially on wall bases, roof gutters, air inlets and duct penetrations.
