On an insulation job, you're juggling dust, cuts, falls and irritant products. With the right PPE and simple habits, you protect your team without slowing the pace, and you keep a clean, professional site. Mask, goggles, gloves, ventilation, clearly defined work zones — this is often where the difference is made.

Identifying the key risks on an insulation job site

Falls from height: attics, roofs, scaffolding and hatch openings

In attics and on roofs, safety is first and foremost about falls. Before rolling out a batt, identify hatch openings, fragile joists, edges and access points. Check the condition of ladders and scaffolding, the guardrail, and plan for anchor points when a harness is needed.

Respiratory risks: dust, fibres and ventilation of work areas

Cutting insulation, blowing, removing old materials. These tasks release dust and fibres. Isolate the area, ventilate it, and use suitable extraction. An FFP2 mask or higher, plus goggles, limit exposure, especially in poorly ventilated attics.

Cuts, burns and manual handling: tools, stapling, adhesives and loads

Utility knives, staplers and saws cause cuts. Adhesives, foams and hot equipment can burn. Add the risk of handling rolls and bags. Organise storage, work in pairs when needed, and adopt safe practices with gloves and long sleeves.

Working at height: harness, lanyard, helmet and anchor points

In unconverted attics, on a roof or on scaffolding, plan ahead for falls. Fall risk: a properly adjusted fall-arrest harness, a lanyard with a shock absorber, a helmet with a chin strap. Use compliant anchor points and check there's no fall factor issue. A visual check of the equipment before every job avoids nasty surprises.

Building day-to-day safety habits on site

Marking off, circulation and tidiness: limiting falls and collisions

Mark off passage, storage and work zones as soon as you arrive. Visible marking, adequate lighting and cables kept out of walkways reduce falls. Keep the floor clean. A regular sweep is often worth more than a long lecture on safety.

Checking tools and equipment: extraction, extension leads, scaffolding, ladders

Before starting, do a quick walkaround. Extraction connected and filters clean to limit dust. Extension leads uncoiled, insulation intact, RCD protection in place. In 2026, keep safety simple and traceable. A prevention plan is required as soon as there's shared activity with an outside company.
